Johan Botha led his team from the front to guide South Africa to a 17-run victory over Australia in the second Twenty20 international in Pretoria on Sunday.
The Proteas captain took two wickets for 16 runs and was given good support from debutants Yusuf Abdullah (one for 16) and Roelof van der Merwe (one for 30), while Johann Louw (two for 36) also chipped in as the visitors were limited to 139 for eight. Van der Merwe also made a useful contribution with the bat, slamming 48 from only 30 deliveries as the hosts posted 156 for five. Powerful boundary-hitting from Albie Morkel and Mark Boucher in the last five overs of the innings Friday took South Africa to a four-wicket victory with four balls to spare over Australia in a Twenty20 cricket match.
South Africa finished on 168-6 in reply to Australia's 166-7 to go 1-0 up in the two-match series. The second game will be played at Centurion on Sunday. Earlier, David Hussey smashed 88 not out off 44 balls to guide Australia to a defendable total. He smacked five fours and six sixes after coming to the wicket with the score on 16-2. The only other Australian batsman to make a meaningful contribution was opener David Warner, who hit four fours and a six to score 38. An inspired performance by Ramnaresh Sarwan steered the West Indies to a comfortable six-wicket victory over England in their one-off Twenty20 match at the Queen's Park Oval on Sunday.
Sarwan helped run out two England players and then hit a fine 59 to spur the West Indies to 123-4 off 18 overs, finishing with 12 balls remaining, in reply to the visitors' modest 121 all out off 19.1 overs. Opener Steve Davies, on his international debut, topscored for England with 27. But Sulieman Benn took 3-24 and a total of three run outs caused England's innings to stutter. There was also a wicket apiece for Lionel Baker (1-12), Darren Sammy (1-14), Fidel Edwards (1-18) and Dwayne Bravo (1-34). The West Indies lost an early wicket but Sarwan, the standout batsman in the preceding test series, guided his side to victory. Having already engineered the runouts of Gareth Batty and Dimitri Mascarenhas, the 28-year-old right-hander lashed four fours and two sixes off 46 balls before he fell with the victory in sight. Lendl Simmons contributed a level-headed 23 not out while Kieron Pollard (4 not out) ended the match with a boundary. On 17 February 2005 Australia defeated New Zealand in the first men's full international Twenty20 match, played at Eden Park in Auckland. The game was played in a light-hearted manner - both sides turned out in kit similar to that worn in the 1980s, the New Zealand team's a direct copy of that worn by the Beige Brigade. Some of the players also sported moustaches/beards and hair styles popular in the 1980s taking part in a competition amongst themselves for best retro look, at the request of the Beige Brigade. Australia won the game comprehensively, and as the result became obvious towards the end of the NZ innings, the players and umpires took things less seriously - Glenn McGrath jokingly replayed the Trevor Chappell underarm incident from a 1981 ODI between the two sides, and Billy Bowden showed him a mock red card (red cards are not normally used in cricket) in response.
The first Twenty20 international in England was played between England and Australia at the Rose Bowl in Hampshire on the 13 June 2005, which England won by a record margin of 100 runs. On 9 January 2006 Australia and South Africa met in the first international Twenty20 game in Australia. In a first, each player's nickname appeared on the back of his uniform, rather than his surname. The international match drew a crowd of 38,894 people at the The Gabba. Australia convincingly won the match with man of the match Damien Martyn scoring 96 runs. On 16 February 2006 New Zealand defeated West Indies in a tie-breaking bowl-out 3-0; 126 runs were scored apiece in the game proper. The game was the last international match played by Chris Cairns - NZC handed out life-size cardboard masks of his face to patrons as they entered the ground.
